Designing Children's Rugs
Many of us have that special little person in our lives that we would like to create. One they can keep for a lifetime. There are few patterns commericially that can be found, but not many. Some commercial patterns can be adapted to fit your liking. Take Finn's rug for example. This is a pattern called "Child's Play" designed by Jane McGown Flynn #1503 sold by Honey Bee Hive. It measures 34 x 54. I adapted it for our first grandson by incorporating his statistics, home, family names, and personal scripture I chose for him. All it takes is imagination. If you find a pattern and desire to reflect your child, it can be done. Be sure to give credit to the original artist when you label your finished work.

Callan is our second grandson. I decided to draw his from scratch and include big brother Finn (piloting the plane announcing his arrival). With this rug I decided to include their home, grandparents homes, Mom and Dad's workplace, all the stats. Once again I included a scripture verse I chose especially for him. Big brother Finn really like trucks and trains, building sites and was insistent I hook this into the rug so Grammy complied. This was a fun "windy" rug to hook. We live in a rural area so that is why I included the farm setting/tractor in the corner as a "filler".

To begin the process of planning a rug I will take you through the process of what it looks like to create Spencer's rug. I met with Grandma Marty. She had decided to hook a rug for her new grandson with an ocean theme. She knew she wanted certain elements like the small boat "The SS Spencer" and an underwater ocean world. I drew her a sketch. Once that was approved, we then discussed size and colors. The pattern was transferred to linen. Rugs like these, being pictorials, are great for using scraps. When considering wools needed, your greatest expense will be dyed wools needed for large areas. For example, we needed ocean water, in a variety of shades and sky to reflect the color of the water color.

Marty's masterpiece complete. What a
wonderful job she did completing this rug.
